Dates: September 25th through 27th (Friday to Sunday)
Website: http://startupHB.com
We have approximately 25 spots available for this event and are inviting NC folks from a variety of backgrounds–business development, project management, Web design, programming, marketing, & PR. Housing and most of the meals will be subsidized partly by sponsors, but we need an accurate head count so we can make final preparations. Please use the CONTACT link in the top navigation of this site to inquire about open spots. There will be a modest registration fee of approximately $99 to cover some of the costs not being covered via local sponsorship, but housing and most meals and snacks are provided. [See the agenda area of this site for a complete breakdown of the weekend.]
Startup Weekend is an conference unlike any you’ve attended before–over the course of a single weekend, you get to take time out from your current venture/business and practice building a new one. Over the course of the weekend, ideas are pitched, teams are formed, and new companies conceptualized, built, and launched! Each person improvises using their own instruments and style to create something entirely new and wonderful–all in one brief session. You’re not judged (unless you judge) and learning is paramount. It’s an awesome three days of networking, team building, coding, business planning and pitching (with some added cocktails and food). AND, this particular SW is being hosted in beautiful Holden Beach, North Carolina
The 1st Holden Beach Startup Weekend saw the birth of two new companies–BoomClickaBoom (http://twitter.com/boomclickaboom) and Paid2Perfect. BoomClickaBoom has continued to thrive since Startup Weekend Holden Beach V.1 and has participated in two StartupHB Splinter Cell retreat weekends since. Splinter Cell weekends are incubator style events that the StartupHB team introduced this year to mentor infant companies during their first months.

This past weekend, Josh Holden and Scott Brewster, organizers of Startup Weekend Holden Beach (StartupHB) brought back one of the teams from StartupHB for what they called the StartupHB Splinter Cell Weekend. The idea was to create a retreat work environment for teams that remain active after Startup Weekend. BoomClickaBoom was identified as the most active team since StartupHB and was invited back to the beach to work on their projects–TweedleDM (a Web app and mobile app for searching and organizing Twitter direct messages) and PracticePlanr (a mobile app to help coaches and parents plan sports practices). The weekend event was a success, and the BoomClickaBoom team was able to make substantial progress on their projects. Moreover, even though not all BoomClickaBoom team members were able to attend the weekend retreat, those absent participated by working with their teammates virtually. Josh and Scott and the entire BoomBlickaBoom team agree that the StartupHB Splinter Cell Weekend provided the perfect environment for encouraging budding entrepreneurs to stay focused on their new businesses and motivated to continue working on their projects.
Beyond serving as hosts for StartupHB Splinter Cell Weekend, Josh and Scott were working on their own business endeavors and planning for the next Startup Weekend. In fact, it’s now official, Startup Weekend Holden Beach V.2 will be held September 25 – 27, 2009. Those interested in the invite-only event should fill out the interest form by clicking on “Contact” in the top menu navigation of the http://startuphb.com site.
